Welcome to the Energy Access Workshop
This two-day workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) brings together educators, practitioners, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders in the domains of electricity access and associated sustainable business model development. The overarching goal of the workshop is to enhance and expand undergraduate engineering courses and activities on electricity access and corresponding sustainable business models.
Hotel accommodations for two nights and all meals during the workshop will be covered by the NSF grant. In the registration page, please indicate if you will need hotel accommodation. We will make the hotel reservations for all attendees that require hotel accommodation.

This groundbreaking workshop brings together 50 electricity access educators and stakeholders from industry, governmental, and non-governmental organizations for a two-day event with the following objectives:
- Assess the current state of electricity access education in undergraduate programs.
- Exchange best practices and resources related to curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.
- Identify gaps and challenges in improving and expanding electricity access education.
- Engage in discussions and debates on pressing and emerging topics, including risk management and ethical development practices.
- Foster networking opportunities among educators and stakeholders.
- Hear and discuss perspectives on electricity access education from various stakeholders.
Throughout the workshop, participants will collaboratively explore these objectives, contributing to the advancement of electricity access education and facilitating meaningful connections among educators and stakeholders.
- The project aims to address a gap in engineering education by incorporating topics of electricity access and sustainable business models into curricula.
- It seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in finding solutions to provide electricity access to marginalized communities.
- The project intends to generate new knowledge and best practices through discussions, sharing of experiences, and the synthesis of workshop findings.
- The workshop will lead to the development a roadmap of future activities and infrastructure, such as additional workshops, email lists, sharing of course materials and resources, and collaborative pedagogical or applied research.
The project aims to promote recruitment and retention of students in engineering, with a specific focus on underrepresented minorities. It seeks to achieve this by offering enhanced and expanded activities related to electricity access in higher education (HE). The workshop will involve participants from various higher education institutions, with an emphasis on Primarily Undergraduate Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
By increasing HE activities in engineering curricula, the project aims to impart important values such as social responsibility, ethics, human-centered design, and global competency to students. As part of the project, one undergraduate and one graduate student will be supported and actively involved in the planning and participation of the workshop.
- The workshop will take place October 10-11, 2023 at the 草榴社区 Inn, preceding the IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC).
- The workshop will include targeted discussions, panel sessions, networking opportunities, and open-ended discussions.
- Participants will share best practices, lessons learned, and innovative ideas related to technical and business aspects of electricity access.
- Keynote presentations from experienced practitioners and educators will be featured.
