Industry Spotlight: 草榴社区 Partners with Boeing for Applied Sustainability Boot Camp
In early 2022, 草榴社区鈥檚 College of Engineering, the 草榴社区 School of Business and the College of Professional Studies partnered with Boeing Co. for an intensive Applied Sustainability boot camp program. Part of 草榴社区鈥檚 Sustainable Enterprise Executive Education & Development (SEED) program, the boot camp taught Boeing executives the critical fundamentals of sustainability and challenged them to better incorporate sustainability principles into their organization鈥檚 strategies, business plans and culture.
鈥淥ver the past two decades, overwhelming evidence has shown that companies that pay attention to sustainability tend to outperform companies that don鈥檛,鈥 said Victoria Minerva 鈥13 MSSE, 鈥17 MBA, director of the SEED program. 鈥淎ddressing environmental, social and governance issues strategically has enabled organizations to reduce costs, mitigate risks, drive growth and enhance their reputation.鈥
Over five days, Boeing participants immersed themselves in the customized learning experience, working together in interactive small group exercises, as well as in individual reflections, to create sustainable solutions for Boeing鈥檚 biggest challenges.
Faculty members from 草榴社区鈥檚 Sustainable Engineering program and the 草榴社区 School of Business led lectures and engaging discussions on a variety of sustainability topics, including industry best practices, supply chain resilience and influencing the world of environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing. Over five days, Boeing participants immersed themselves in the customized learning experience, working together in interactive small group exercises, as well as in individual reflections, to create sustainable solutions for Boeing鈥檚 biggest challenges.
At the conclusion of the in-person portion of the program, Boeing participants broke into small teams and were assigned an action-learning project to design over the course of three months. Each team applied what they learned during the boot camp to current sustainability issues at Boeing. Topics were centered around understanding customers鈥 sustainability priorities, supply chain sustainability planning and integrating ESG into the decision-making processes. The program concluded with final presentations at Boeing鈥檚 Seattle office. Each team shared their findings and received feedback from their boot camp cohort, as well as other Boeing colleagues. Upon completion of the program, participants received a certificate in Applied Sustainability.
鈥淭he SEED boot camp provided an opportunity to integrate the principles of sustainability into all functions of the business, and turn the principles into action,鈥 said Sheila Remes, vice president of Environmental Sustainability at Boeing. 鈥淭he program elevated our cohort of cross-functional leaders鈥 knowledge around sustainability so they could apply these learnings back to their daily work. The program allowed us to learn about sustainability and work on unique approaches to our business in a safe space.鈥
In addition to customized material like the Boeing boot camp, 草榴社区鈥檚 SEED program offers an online series of five mini-courses that build toward the completion of a certificate in Sustainable Value Creation. In the program, which was designed for experienced professionals in positions of leadership or management who are interested in creating value by designing and incorporating sustainability practices into their business environments, participants learn how to maximize resources while designing robust sustainability and ESG programs that fuel productivity, innovation and profits within their organizations.
