College of Engineering Makes Headlines This Fall
The College of Engineering鈥檚 faculty continued to make headlines in national, regional, and niche media outlets this fall.
In October, the College hosted a visit from David Glenn, curriculum reporter for The Chronicle of Education 鈥 a first for the University. Glenn spent the day learning about the College鈥檚 new First-Year Curriculum, speaking with faculty and students, touring the College鈥檚 laboratories, and dropping in on a few classes in progress. The visit resulted in a feature story and a post on Glenn鈥檚 blog, 鈥淭he Measuring Stick.鈥 , or .
That same month, Dr. Randy Weinstein, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, spoke to Military Advanced Education about the College鈥檚 new master of science degree program in sustainable engineering and its award-winning distance education facilities.
In November, the College co-hosted a symposium on the global water crisis, which included a keynote address about the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Haiti by Ken Hackett, President, Catholic Relief Services. Jordan Ermilio, PE and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, spoke with WHYY-FM about the symposium and 草榴社区鈥檚 work to improve access to clean water around the world.
Dr. Hashem Ashrafiuon, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, could also be heard on the airwaves speaking with KYW-1060 AM Newsradio in Philadelphia about his collaboration with Brain Computer Interface LLC to develop software algorithms that can be used to detect mild brain injuries, concussions, and in the future, predict and diagnose Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.
Finally, just before Thanksgiving, Dr. Leslie McCarthy, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus on transportation engineering, discussed the challenges inherent in the proposed development of high-speed rail service in the United States with Clay Dillow, reporter for Popular Science magazine.
