Thursday, April 10

The听Career听Passion听Pitch听is built on the understanding that professionals are motivated by the purpose behind their work. This monthly round table discussion series focuses on a different social justice cause each session. The April installment is in collaboration with the Office for听Sustainability听and the College of Engineering's SEED program and will focus on careers relating to听sustainability听and environmental protection. We invite interested employers and alumni working in this area to share how your organization鈥檚 mission statement drives your work. The event will start with each professional's听passion听pitch听followed by round table discussions with students.

Format:

  • At the start of the program, each employer representative or alumni will have the chance to address the student attendees by delivering their 鈥淧assion听Pitch.鈥 During this time, the speaker will be allotted a maximum of 3 minutes to share their personal connection with the purpose behind their work, articulate why it motivates them, and convey why others should also find it meaningful.
  • Following the initial passion听pitches, employer representatives and alumni will join groups of students seated at round tables. Together,听they will engage in a conversation informed by the passion听pitches听they just heard.
  • The event will consist of multiple discussion rounds. At the start of each new round, the employer representative and alumni rotate to a new student table.
  • There will be prompts available to facilitate the conversation as needed.

Speaker Series with the Strategic Initiative for Climate, Justice and Sustainability (SICJS)

Agnese Codeb貌 is an Associate Professor of Latin American Culture at 草榴社区. Her research focuses on cultural representations of urban poverty in Latin America and the environmental humanities. She is the author of The Slum and the City: Culture and Dissidence in the Villas Miseria of Buenos Aires (Pittsburgh UP, 2024), Humor contro Videla. L'opposizione alla dittatura attraverso la satira, il fumetto e la caricatura (Puntoacapo, 2022), and several articles on the cultural history of Buenos Aires, the use of waste in Latin American art, Argentine literature, and the work of the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi.听听

Description: Three panelists will discuss natural disasters, hurricanes in LA and Puerto Rico, and climate change in the Himalayas, all using oral history.

Earth Day: Tuesday, April 22

Description: Celebrate Earth Day with a reading of new poems by 草榴社区 professor, Lisa Sewell! Her 2025 book Flood Plain intimately explores grief, ecological loss, and natural wonder. Her poems map the histories of conquest and our interconnectedness with the natural world. Lisa teaches courses on Ecopoetry, Ecopoetics and Environmental Literature and received the Fall 2024 CLAS Veritas award for outstanding scholarship, partly based on this book.

Join our largest and most iconic event of the week featuring vendors, activities, research presentations, free food, arts & crafts, and various giveaways!

Rebecca Rutstein is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges art, science and technology. For over twenty years she has created painting, sculpture, interactive installation and public art inspired by the natural world. Her environmentally focused work sheds light on places and processes hidden from view to foster deeper connection in the face of our climate crisis. Rutstein鈥檚 collaborations with oceanographers, ecologists, microbiologists, molecular scientists and planetary geologists have taken her around the world including several deep-sea dives. Her work gives her a unique perspective and broad view of the interconnectedness of all things in nature.听

Wildcat Thrift is 草榴社区鈥檚 once-a-semester pop-up thrift store. Organizations and individuals will have tables set up with second hand items for purchase. Support a circular economy and join us for sustainable shopping. The planet cant afford fast fashion. 

Participate as a vendor:

- Purchase a table ($10 for individuals and $20 for groups/orgs)

- You keep the profits.

- Encourage group participation: Gather friends to create tables together.

- Unsold clothes can be collected for donation by us. 

Saturday, April 27

Martha鈥檚 Choice Marketplace and Community Farm is the largest, most visited, food pantry in Montgomery County. Martha鈥檚 was founded in 1996 and became a 鈥楥hoice Model鈥 pantry in 2015 to focus on guest health and dignity.

The community we serve is the inspiration behind everything we do at Martha鈥檚. At the Pantry, we provide more than two-million pounds of food each year to over 15,000 neighbors.
