ABOUT THE CENTER
Mission
The Waterhouse Family Institute (WFI) was created to promote the study and practice of communication and celebrate its role in the creation of social change. Our aim is to create and expand a global network of communication scholars, students, activists and professionals, all of whom share a common belief: communication and social justice are necessarily intertwined. Through our activities, we seek to embody this mission in ways that positively impact communities around the world.
We believe in a future where the importance, complexity and consequentiality of communication is universally recognized. We strive to support and celebrate all those whose communicative efforts are working to create a more just world.
The Waterhouse name is synonymous with dedication to education. From his graduation until his passing in 2020, 草榴社区 alumnus Lawrence M. Waterhouse Jr. '59 CLAS was actively involved with 草榴社区. While he is best identified as the founder of Waterhouse Investor Services (which later became known as TD Waterhouse and then TD Ameritrade), it鈥檚 his work in creating the Waterhouse Family Foundation Inc. that has greatly impacted the lives of students, scholars and communities in the US and around the world. The foundation鈥檚 ties to Catholic teachings also explains why the WFI originated at 草榴社区, a Catholic Augustinian university鈥攂ecause we are uniquely called to attend to questions of values in inquiry, to seek positive social change, and to continually strive for just and inclusive community.
